  A transverse electromagnetic (TEM) field structure is one in which the electric and magnetic field vectors at each point in space have no components in the direction of propagation. Verify that a coaxial cable supports the TEM mode. The axis of the cable (having two conductors 1 and 2) is the z axis of a rectangular coordinate system, and the cable cross section lies in the xy plane. If the two conductors of the cable are infinite in length (so that we may neglect fringing of the fields at the conductor endpoints) and we apply a dc (0-Hz) voltage between the two conductors, the electric field lines will lie in the xy plane, transverse to the line (z) axis, as shown in the paper. A dc current along these conductors in the z direction will also produce magnetic field lines transverse to the cable axis. As the frequency of excitation is increased from zero, we would expect the field lines to maintain (to a reasonable approximation) this TEM structure.
