Complex envelope notation provides a convenient means of characterizing the information-carrying component of modulated carrier signals so the carrier frequency component of the signal (which does not carry information) does not appear in the signal description. The properties of complex signal descriptions outlined in this appendix are discussed in some detail in references 1 and 2.
