The recent advent of grid-scale energy storage systems (ESS) has been the result of both technology and market advancements. To reach the current levels of confidence in the coming wide-scale adoption of energy storage, the real-world operation of large-scale ESS has been needed to prove that effective operation can be achieved. This was the purpose of the Smarter Network Storage (SNS) project delivered by UK Power Networks from 2013 to 2016.
