Electrical steels perform very well in the role of high-quality flux magnifiers available at moderate cost. Some other materials perform this function better in some respects and worse in others. Most of them are much more expensive than electrical steels but have specialist properties which make their use appropriate for some niche applications. The spheres of use of these materials and a view of their properties will be briefly examined.
