This chapter discusses an approach for competency modelling and assessment, known as the Universal Approach to Competence Assessment and Modelling (UCAM). The UCAM Framework has been in use since 2009 and was first formally published in 2011 (Holt and Perry, 2011) and has been expanded upon since (Holt and Perry, 2013). The Framework itself has evolved since its first applications and has been used widely in industry, academia and government for many years. The existence of the UCAM Framework pre-dates the patterns presented in this book, but was used as one of the source to identify and define a number of patterns.
