On 2nd November 1936, the world's, first, public, regular, high-definition television service was inaugurated at Alexandra Palace, London. The decision to establish the service was made by Parliament following the submission to it of the report of the Television Committee. Marconi-EMI Television Company Ltd. and the Baird Television Company were the two companies invited to submit tenders for studio and transmitting equipment and, for a short period from 2nd November 1936 to 13th February 1937, both companies transmitted television programmes, on an alternate basis from the London television station. Subsequently, until the commencement of hostilities in September 1939, only the Marconi-EMl equipment was in operation.
