The five-year period 1875-1880 was a remarkable one in the history of society. The practical inventions of the telephone (1876), the phonograph (1877), the incandescent lamp (1878) and the nascent ideas concerning the means to achieve cinematography (1876) and 'seeing by electricity' (1879) were eventually to transform the living and entertainment standards of the world's developing countries.
