In a report to Hitler, Doenitz wrote: 'We are at present facing the greatest crisis in submarine warfare since the enemy, by means of location devices, makes fighting impossible and is causing us heavy losses.' Later, Hitler ascribed the subsequent stagnation in the U-boat war to a single invention of the Allies. He probably had in mind the centimetric radar set known as Air Surface Vessel (ASV) radar which was a version of H2S radar. Analysis of the Battle of the Atlantic shows that operational use from about March 1943 of this radar in Coastal Command's aircraft, had the most profound effect in achieving success. The radar led to victory over the U-boats.
