By the summer of 1941, metric radars, operating at wavelengths of about 1.5 m, had been developed for air interception, gun laying, searchlight control, coastal defence, ground-controlled interception and early warning of low-flying aircraft. The radiating structures of some of these radars produced broad antenna beams which were not wholly suitable for the applications for which the radars were designed.
