Of all the battles of the Second World War, two of the most important were the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic. Both battles directly threatened the freedom of existence of the United Kingdom; both battles were won by narrow margins; and both battles were won because of the support given to the fighting forces by technology. An indispensable element in both battles was the Allies' ability to detect and locate hostile air and sea forces by means of radar.
