Although the initial priorities for work of the new Laboratories were the problems of incandescent filament lamps, valves began to be a subject of research even while the Laboratories were still at Hammersmith. The first numbered internal report, dated 21st March 1919, by J. Wade, gave the results of 'Valve experiments' carried out in March 1919; these experiments were on distortion of anodes of rectifiers during processing and on the blackening of bulbs. However, only after the move to Wembley did work on valves become a major task. An internal report, dated May 1922, entitled 'Valves for broadcasting sets' anticipated the start of sound broadcasting later that year when the London Station (2LO) was opened in November and the build up of demand for large quantities of valves for receivers began.
