The Illumination Laboratory (as it was originally called) served the commercial lighting departments of the GEC primarily in the design, development and testing of lighting equipment for many different applications. In doing so it played a major part in the development of lighting technology and in establish ing lighting as an important industry. The basis of its work was to understand how light should be distributed in order to give good 'seeing conditions' and hence to determine how lighting equipment should best be designed and arranged. The laboratory was not alone in these objectives, of course, but its success made it widely recognised as one of the most important groups in the world concerned with this subject.
