It appears that by the middle of 1920, a Patent Department existed in the Research Laboratories at Hammersmith. A meeting was held in Mr. Hirst's office on the 13th July 1920 at which it was agreed that the best place to locate and centralise responsibility for a GEC patent organisation was at the Labora tories. The Director of the Laboratories was to be responsible for all action taken in patent matters subject to final confirmation, through authorisation of payment of charges, by a Director at Head Office. It was agreed at this meeting that the responsibility of the patent organisation at the Research Laboratories would be complete. Action in connection with patent matters by all branches of the Company would be initiated in conjunction with, and carried through by, the central organisation.
