The use of statistical methods and quality control within GEC undoubtedly exerted an indirect influence on British industry by acquainting industrialists with statistical methods.Practical experience in the engineering industries between 1942 and 1944 had revealed the need for a handbook of instructions to assist people in more junior positions of responsibility in constructing control charts. To meet this need, the GEC Research Laboratories published in 1944 the handbook entitled 'Quality control chart technique when manufacturing to a specification'. This found wide acceptance, and was later published as BS 2564:1955.
