All laboratories have active, exciting phases and equally they may have periods when they are less effective, in some cases to the point where they are or should be closed. In a laboratory such as Wembley, with a variety of disciplines, activities and 'customers', these good and less good periods do not all come at the same time but vary from Division to Division or Group to Group unless there is something wrong with the overall direction. It would be wrong to pretend that the Wembley Laboratories, or parts of them, have not been through such cycles. The authors have been too much involved in the work of the Laboratories to offer an objective analysis at this point, but hope that readers can form conclusions from the information presented. One thing that is clear, however, is the resurgence of the Laboratories in the last five years of this account.
