This chapter discusses the motion estimation. Motion 'sensing' has been widely studied both in computational contexts and biological contexts. Experiments conducted by Exner as far back as 1875 showed the ability of the human visual system to detect motion as a fundamental quantity. In this experiment, the timing of a series of electrical spark generators could be controlled. With correct timing, observers would see a single moving spark rather than a series of individual sparks. Computational studies of motion sensing have appeared more recently (most prominently since the 1970s) as computing power has increased.
