Published Special Issues

Read the latest Special Issue of Micro & Nano Letters which presents some of the best, expanded papers from the 6th Annual IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems (NEMS 2011). Guest edited by Prof. Gwo-Bin Lee (National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan) and Haixia (Alice) Zhang (Peking University in Beijing, China).

Published in May 2011, this Special Issue of Micro & Nano Letters on Micro-Nanoengineered Platforms for Mechanobiology Studies presents recent advances in micro- and nanoengineering-based methods and applications in cellular biomechanics and mechanobiology. Guest Editors Prof. Yu Sun (University of Toronto) and Prof. Deok-Ho Kim (University of Washington).

About Micro & Nano Letters

Micro & Nano Letters offers express online publication of short research papers containing the latest advances in miniature and ultraminiature structures and systems. With an average of six weeks to decision, and publication online in advance of each issue, Micro & Nano Letters offers a rapid route for the international dissemination of high quality research findings from both the micro and nano communities.

Scope: The editors of Micro & Nano Letters invite the submission of original manuscripts presenting research conducted at the forefront of micro- and nanoscale science, engineering and technology, with at least one dimension ranging from a few tens of micrometres to a few nanometres.

Contributions addressing issues spanning from fundamental understanding to experimental demonstrations in the disciplines of engineering, physical, chemical, biological and material science should be submitted. Particular interest is placed on manuscripts addressing cross-disciplinary activities and applications.

Typical topics include:

  • MEMS and NEMS
  • Micro- and nanostructures and devices
  • Modelling, simulation and realisation of micro- and nanoscale structures, devices and systems
  • Synthesis and processing
  • Micro- and nano-photonics
  • Molecular machines, circuits and self-assembly
  • Organic and inorganic micro- and nanostructures
  • Micro- and nanofluidics

Use of environmental scanning electron microscopy for in situ observation of interaction of cells with micro- and nanoprobes, Vol.6, No.8, p.603–608

Removal of glass micropipette from common bean leaf after penetrationThe development of ultra-fine probes capable of precise individual cell targeting, as well as tough cell wall penetration, requires extensive knowledge of cell–probe interaction. Researchers from the US have evaluated the applicability of environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) for cell and cell–probe interaction imaging. Several types of cells were successfully imaged in their natural state, with mouse spermatoza observed by ESEM for the first time. Their results demonstrate the suitability of ESEM for high-resolution in situ imaging of cells, while also providing information that will assist the development of probes for minimally-invasive intercellular probing.

Forthcoming Special Issue

Micro & Nano Letters will publish a Special Issue on Micro and Nano Technologies for Probe-based Microscopy to present recent aspects and improvements of probe functionalisation, design and use. This issue will be guest edited by Dr M. Lucia Curri (CNR IPCF Bari Division), Prof. Garry Fedder (Carnegie Mellon University) and Prof. Beth Pruitt (Stanford University). For more information, please see the Call for Papers flyer. Deadline for submissions: 30 November 2011.
