  • This book provides an efficient introduction to fundamental and advanced digital transmission technologies in current and future wireless communication systems. The objective is to help students and engineers quickly grasp the operating principles and design trade-offs of various wireless transmission technologies, which will enable them to carry out product development or perform academic research in the field. With sufficient theoretical depth, the book covers large-scale channel effects; multipath fading; digital transmission over flat fading; fading mitigation through diversity combining; transmission over frequency selective fading; spread spectrum transmission; channel capacity and coding; channel adaptive transmission; MIMO transmission; and advanced topics including multiuser diversity transmission, cooperative relay transmission and multiuser MIMO transmission. The material is presented without assuming an extensive digital communications background from the readers. The design principles of these technologies are manifested with over 100 carefully designed illustration and over 60 problem-solving examples. The readers can also check their own understanding with extra practice problems at the end of each chapter. Special emphasis is placed on the important trade-off analysis of performance versus complexity.

But achieving these aims brings new challenges such as issues with power consumption, algorithm complexity, device memory limitations, frequent changes in operational environment, security, durability, reliability, and connectivity. Mobile Biometrics provides a timely survey of the state of the art research and developments in this rapidly growing area. Topics covered in Mobile Biometrics include mobile biometric sensor design, deep neural network for mobile person recognition with audio-visual signals, active authentication using facial attributes, fusion of shape and texture features for lip biometry in mobile devices, mobile device usage data as behavioral biometrics, continuous mobile authentication using user phone interaction, smartwatch-based gait biometrics, mobile four-fingers biometrics system, palm print recognition on mobile devices, periocular region for smartphone biometrics, and face anti-spoofing on mobile devices.

image of High Frequency MOSFET Gate Drivers: Technologies and Applications
  • High Frequency MOSFET Gate Drivers: Technologies and Applications
  • This book describes high frequency power MOSFET gate driver technologies, including gate drivers for GaN HEMTs, which have great potential in the next generation of switching power converters. Gate drivers serve as a critical role between control and power devices. In recent years, there has been a trend to increase the switching frequency beyond multi-MHz in switching power converters to reduce the passive components and significantly improve power density. However, this results in high switching loss and gate driver loss in power MOSFETs. The novel approach in this book is the proposed Current Source Gate Driver (CSD) including different topologies, control and applications. The CSD can reduce the switching transition time and switching loss significantly, and recover high frequency gate driver loss compared to conventional voltage gate drivers. The basic idea can also be extended to other power devices to improve high frequency switching performance such as SiC MOSFET and IGBT. Topics covered in the book include the state-of-the-art of power MOSFET drive techniques, the switching loss model, current source gate drivers (CSDs), resonant gate drivers, adaptive gate drivers and GaN HEMT gate drivers. The book is essential reading for design engineers, researchers and advanced students working in switching power supplies and in power electronics generally.

  • Data Security in Cloud Computing
  • Cloud Computing has already been embraced by many organizations and individuals due to its benefits of economy, reliability, scalability and guaranteed quality of service among others. But since the data is not stored, analysed or computed on site, this can open security, privacy, trust and compliance issues. This one-stop reference covers a wide range of issues on data security in Cloud Computing ranging from accountability, to data provenance, identity and risk management. Data Security in Cloud Computing covers major aspects of securing data in Cloud Computing. Topics covered include NOMAD: a framework for ensuring data confidentiality in mission-critical cloud based applications; 3DCrypt: privacy-preserving pre-classification volume ray-casting of 3D images in the cloud; multiprocessor system-on-chip for processing data in Cloud Computing; distributing encoded data for private processing in the cloud; data protection and mobility management for cloud; understanding software defined perimeter; security, trust and privacy for Coud Computing in transportation cyber-physical systems; review of data leakage attack techniques in cloud systems; Cloud Computing and personal data processing: sorting out legal requirements; the Waikato data privacy matrix; provenance reconstruction in clouds; and security visualization for Cloud Computing.

image of Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motors
  • Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motors
  • Induction motors are still among the most reliable and important electrical machines. The wide range of their use involves various electrical, magnetic, thermal and mechanical stresses which results in the need for fault diagnosis as part of the maintenance. A yet unreached goal is the development of a generalized, practical approach enabling industry to accurately diagnose different potential induction motor faults. Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motors aims to fill this gap by focusing on theoretical, experimental and computer aided processes for fault diagnosis, building a comprehensive, structural approach allowing users to select the proper diagnosis strategy. Topics covered include condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of induction motors; the theory of line-start and inverter-fed induction motors; induction motor faults basics, developments and laboratory-scale implementation; magneto-motive force waves in healthy three-phase induction motors; multiple coupled circuit model of induction motors; finite element implementation of induction motors in healthy and faulty conditions; signal processing techniques utilized in fault diagnosis procedures; diagnosis of broken bars fault in induction motors; diagnosis of eccentricity fault in induction motors; and diagnosis of inter-turn short circuit fault in induction motors. This work is essential reading for researchers and technicians involved with motor-drive applications and their related maintenance procedures or dealing with applications of signal processing techniques.
